Winery Description: Sanford Winery, founded in 1971 by botanist Michael Benedict and wine enthusiast Richard Sanford, is a pioneering estate in California’s Sta. Rita Hills. The duo identified the region’s unique potential for cool-climate viticulture and planted the now-legendary Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, establishing one of the first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Their groundbreaking work helped define the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, officially recognized in 2001. In 2002, the Terlato family joined as partners and later became majority owners, enhancing the winery’s operations and reuniting the original vineyard under Sanford’s stewardship. Today, Sanford Winery is celebrated for its estate-grown, sustainably farmed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, reflecting both the terroir and the legacy of its founders.
