Rioja, Spain: March 2010.
My wife and I went with friends to Rioja.
We stayed at Eguren Ugarte, a winery that just opened a hotel in January 2010.
We went with our Madrid friends, John, Lis, Jean, Antoine, Lola, Gonzalo, Chris and me (Neil).
95 year old vines. The vineyard is a field blend with Tempranillo, Grenache and Malvasia.
This vine is unidentifiable until the leaves appear later in the Spring.
A walk thru the caves.
The have a program to sell wine by the barrel direct to the consumer.
The caves are deep.
Lots of individual storage areas.
I fit in a future storage unit.
The tour ended in a private room, complete with fireplace, vineyard views on three sides, jamon, bread and five wines. Here are four of the ones we tasted.
We lunched at the winery; the lamb was amazing. Simple, yet so tasty.
Food is cooked in wood-burning ovens, at the entrance to the restaurant, filled with vine trimmings. Check out the smoke.
The girls, back at the hotel. Lola, Chris and Lis.
