I returned to Paris on September 15 for two weeks with my brother, and we made the most of our time in one of my favorite cities. Naturally, there were several visits to Sapiens, my favorite wine bar, along with two cooking classes at La Cuisine Paris, one devoted to making sauces and the other to mastering soufflés.

We also made it inside the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral, taking advantage of surprisingly manageable lines. One of the more unexpected moments came when we saw the Pope drive right past our apartment on Boulevard Saint-Michel! Not something you see every day.

On our first Friday, we took the train to Épernay in the Champagne region. We started the day with a tasting of Dom Pérignon on the Moët & Chandon patio, followed by lunch at Perrier-Jouët. After lunch, we took an Uber to Mareuil-sur-Aÿ for a tour and tasting at Billecart-Salmon.

Between the wine, food, and wandering the streets of Paris, it was a wonderful two weeks.

I got together with my wine group earlier this month for a tasting themed "Cabernet Sauvignon from Anywhere Except France and California." It was fun to explore such a familiar grape grown in different parts of the world, including South Africa, Australia, Italy, Argentina, and Chile. The wines showed just how much Cabernet Sauvignon can vary depending on where it's grown. The Italian wines were the most similar to the California Cabernets we're accustomed to, while Chile's Don Melchor from Chile was the wine of the night.

My cousin Kristine and her husband, Tod, owners of KrisTodd Winery in Napa, visited Paris the following week. Here they are at Sapiens, with owner Thierry standing between them.

Mikaël Desestret, a winemaker from Domaine de la Côte Sainte-Épine in the Northern Rhône, joined Kristine, Tod, and Thierry at Sapiens. The winemakers exchanged bottles and enjoyed tasting each other's wines.


My friend Lisa published a book about Paris last month. It’s not a traditional travel guide, but rather the story of how she fell in love with the city.
