This month we had 157 winery updates since January 15, 2026 and 102 wineries releasing wine this month.

I went to my wine group tasting last week, and our host poured a lineup of unique and memorable bottles including a 1966 Château Corbin Michotte Saint Émilion Grand Cru Bordeaux and a 1945 Chateau Saint Michel Rivesaltes dessert wine.

Last night a friend brought a 2002 Steven Kent Winery California Icarus (members only) wine, a blend of 78% Syrah and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon. We assumed it might be past its prime, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The wine showed graceful sandalwood and cranberry notes and was still very much alive. As I’ve said before, I believe most wines are opened too early rather than too late.

I joined friends for a tasting at Fait-Main’s new St. Helena location, just around the corner from the firehouse. We sampled the 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023 Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023 Tierra Roja Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2022 Tetter Totter Stop Along The Way Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine showed its own personality, and all were enjoyable in their own way.

The unexpected highlight came when I walked into the tasting salon. Downstairs, a table was already full, and sitting together were Bordeaux-trained oenologist Michel Rolland, fellow Bordeaux-trained winemaker Philippe Melka, and French-born Napa Valley winemaker and Fait-Main owner Benoit Touquette blending Fairest Creature. Not exactly an everyday tasting-room sight.
