WineRelease.com's April 15, 2024 Monthly Newsletter.

This month we had 217 winery updates and 89 wineries releasing wine.

Spent a brief weekend getaway in Burgundy, lodging in Beaune and exploring several wineries.

Domaine Lucien Boillot wine thief with Sophie
Sophie from Lucien Boillot treated us to a tasting of their 2023 wines, skillfully using a wine thief to pour us samples.

The highlight was our visit to Domaine Lucien Boillot where we had the pleasure of meeting Sophie, the wife of winemaker Pierre Boillot, who inherited the estate from his father, Lucien, after whom it is named. Sophie graciously guided us through a barrel tasting of their 2023 wines (8 months old), which included selections from Cote de Nuits such as Les Corbeaux and Les Cherbaudes, and from Cote de Beaune, offerings like Clos des Angles and Les Caillerets from Volnay, and Les Fremiers from Pommard. Following this, we sampled two 2022 vintages straight from the bottle: Les Fremiers and Clos des Angles. It was a truly distinctive and delightful experience.

Pommard is just 10 minutes south of Beaune so we made a reservation at Maison Jean-Marc Boillot. Lucien Boillot is Jean-Marc Boillot's uncle. Both produce wines from Burgundy, but they have their own individual styles and approaches to winemaking and are totally separate wineries. The winery was founded by Jean-Marc Boillot, a talented winemaker with a deep family history in winemaking, the estate is revered for producing wines that beautifully express the terroir of Burgundy. With a focus on traditional winemaking techniques and meticulous vineyard management, Maison Jean-Marc Boillot consistently delivers wines of elegance, complexity, and finesse at reasonable prices. The winery is large and bottles can somewhat easily be found in the US. Although a reservation is recommended, you can also taste without a reservation if there is space. If not, there are a few other wineries around and the town is ideal for walking around.

We also visited a wine cave/wine shop, Marche aux Vins/Boutique Wine Market. For the basic tasting, they direct you downstairs to sample four wines where you self-pour (which is unlikely to happen in the US). After the cellar tour, you walk upstairs to their tasting area where the premium experience (priced at 49 euros) will meet, Amelia (most likely), who will pour you 4-5 different wines, mostly Premiere or Grand Cru, and if she's fond of you, she might pour more. On our visit, in addition to the regular wine line up, she graciously poured us two Puligny-Montrachet wines, both of which I ended up purchasing. The shop offers a diverse range of producers. While appointments aren't necessary, the French prefer them.

We opted for dinner at Le Bistro de L’Hotel, renowned for its delectable "Poularde de Bresse" chicken. Our choice proved excellent as the chicken surpassed our expectations—succulent, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. Their morel mushroom dish was outstanding, the best I've ever tasted. The extensive wine list, spanning two inches thick, offers some great bargains. This culinary gem has garnered accolades over the years, earning recognition from Condé Nast Traveler magazine in 2008 as one of the "105 Best Tables" worldwide and currently holding the esteemed 14th spot in the "Top 100+ European Heritage Restaurants".

Le Bénaton restaurant, located in the heart of Beaune, has a menu at that is a testament to the chef's creativity and dedication to using only the finest ingredients. Each dish is a work of art, meticulously crafted to delight the senses. Their wagyu steak was perfectly cooked and exceptionally flavorful. The attentive staff are knowledgeable about the menu and the wine selection is equally impressive, with an extensive list of varietals. But when you are in Burgundy, you order Burgundy.

And now, onto the wine releases...
