WineRelease.com's September 15, 2015 Monthly Newsletter.

Greetings from WineRelease.com, now 2,104 winery listings strong.

This past month was filled with a number of celebrations for us. During our last official 'summer' weekend (before school started), we had some friends join us in St Helena for the Modus Operandi Winery Red Wine & Carnage event. I have never seen so much roasted meat in one place in my life - they had a pig, a lamb, brisket, etc. It was a fun event where we had a nice opportunity to try their recent releases paired with a hearty meaty dish. The icing on the cake, so to speak, was the chocolate fondue pyramid, complete with bacon for dipping.

Our return to San Francisco after spending the summer in wine country was kicked off with a surprise 50th birthday party. For me. My wife and a wonderful group of friends and family staged an evening at SF Local Kitchen and Wine Merchant, full of delicious wines, wood fired pizzas, and really nice entrees, in a farm to table setting. If you are looking to host a private event in San Francisco for up to 80 people, I would highly recommend them. According to my wife, Eva the event planner was amazing, and I can attest that the party was a night to remember.

The Taylor Family Foundation hosted their annual 'Day in the Park', where my paella dinner was auctioned for the fifth year. I am honored to make a small contribution to this great organization, who supports children with life threatening illnesses.

Of course, my birthday month wouldn't be complete without multiple celebrations. My college buddy Randall and I spent five days in Manhattan to kick off our next fifty years. It was really a fantastic trip. We stayed at the Knickerbocker in Times Square (typical tourists, yes, but a great boutique hotel with a fun roof deck and very centrally located for public transportation). Some of the highlights of the trip included an exhibit at the Met and Whitney museums, our own bloody Mary crawl (the best was at the Saxon & Parole on Bowery), dinner at Eataly, and my personal favorite, a culinary tour through Greenwich Village. Fantastic trip full of great food and wine.

This past weekend found us at our annual Stinson Beach trip, with close friends. This trip is something to which we all look forward, throughout the year. Not only does it give us all the opportunity to relax and catch up, but it's a culinary feast and the wines are always a treat. My wife and I cooked the first night, having gone to the Monterey fish market (apparently where the likes of Gary Danko and Thomas Keller shop for fish locally). Favorite dishes included steamed spot prawns (served like lobsters) and the scallops, which we lightly pan-fried in bacon grease. On Friday, we did our annual picnic at Tomales Bay Oyster Company, where I probably shucked 5 dozen oysters. Gorgeous day by the bay and a lot of fun was had by all. Overall a great trip and already looking forward to next year.

We are headed back up to St Helena this weekend for a family wedding and looking forward to getting back to the house after a few weeks away. Our hearts go out to our neighbors to the north, who have suffered significant loss due to the Valley fire in Lake and Napa Counties. We sincerely appreciate the 2,500+ firefighters from all over Northern California who are dedicated to getting the fire under control and our hats go off to the numerous restaurants in Napa and Sonoma counties who are working hard to provide food to those who have been displaced, as well as the various wineries who are collecting donations for those impacted.

Housekeeping note: The Napa Valley Reader's Choice can be found here. I thank all who participated.

And now, onto the wines...
