WineRelease.com's September 15, 2014 Monthly Newsletter.

Greetings from WineRelease.com, now 2,060 winery listings strong.

Like many of you, it seems like we packed about 3 months’ worth of activities into our last few weeks of summer. From camping on the Russian River (think Jamie Oliver burgers paired with Zinfandel) to our annual trip to Stinson Beach to a boys’ weekend in Morro Bay, it’s been a great month.

As we’ve done for the past handful of years, we, along with three other couples, make our annual pilgrimage to a great house on the hill in the coastal town of Stinson Beach, overlooking the ocean. This crew has deep roots in the wine & restaurant industries, so it’s five days of epicurean adventure. My wife and I cooked the first night, starting with gambas al ajillo and raw yellow fin tuna wrapped in a marinated white anchovy, served with Alysian Chardonnay, whose light crispness was a great compliment. We followed that with rosemary honey mustard crusted lamb, good old fashioned baked potatoes and my favorite kale & brussels sprouts, paired with Relic Pinot Noir, which really complimented the slight gaminess of the lamb. Other meals included an amazing boeuf bourguignon served with a creamy polenta dressed with carmelized shallots and a three course dinner featuring an amazing past with squid, peppers, and an aioli sauce, as well as seared duck on a bed of greens. Friday afternoon found us at Hog Island Oyster Company, enjoying Selene Sauvignon Blanc, shucking oysters, and soaking up the sun. All in all, a great time.

This past weekend, I headed down to Morro Bay for a boys’ weekend while my wife hosted her sister’s 40th birthday celebration at our home in St Helena. I asked her to share a few of the highlights:

Dinner Friday: Bistro don Giovanni. Insider tip = always ask for the focaccia and ‘spicy’ dipping oil (except by request, they usually give you French bread and balsamic with olive oil, still delicious but the focaccia is the best we’ve had this side of Italy). Dish of the night was the clam linguine with chopped tomatoes.

Breakfast: Saturday morning started with coffee at our new favorite café, Butterscots at Cairdean Winery (and we returned for sandwiches and salads for lunch), pedicures, then headed up to the Calistoga farmers’ market for a breakfast of tamales and crepes (and a snicker doodle cookie, baked fresh by the local nuns) and music by a local string quartet, then watched Mia paint at the children’s booth. Raspberries, strawberries, heirloom tomatoes and red peppers became a snack later in the day.

Tastings: We started at our neighborhood favorite, Duckhorn. We sat on the back porch overlooking the gardens / vineyards, and enjoyed a sauv blanc, merlot, a few cabs and then they threw in the Golden Eye Pinot. All wines were tasting beautifully. Next, we went about 2 miles to Ehlers Estate, a new winery for us. They taste by appointment only and although we were running a little late, had reserved an area with plush couches and armchairs for our group. Although the varietals were exactly the same as Duckhorn, the wines, of course, were very different. Both highly recommended and a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Dinner: Farmstead. Although Neil and I have probably done two dozen happy hours there, we had never had dinner. Now I have a new go-to. Really really nice meal (highly recommend the house salad with aragula, figs, and blue cheese, as well as the salmon which was some of the best I’d had). The service was excellent as well.

Afterwards, back home to the firepit for a night cap. Sunday morning found us at Model Bakery for pastries and coffee, then off our separate ways for the trip home.

As the air gets a little crisper, and the days a little shorter, we’re looking forward to breaking out the butternut squash soup and hosting a crew. Here’s to a great fall!

And now, onto the wines...
